Early Life of chief Economist of IMF, Gita Gopinath
Coming Chief Economist of IMF, Gita Gopinath borned in Kolkata ,West bengal , India on 8 December 1971 in Malayalee Family. Her father, T V Gopinath was a farmer and mother was a homemaker. Both belongs from Kannur district in Kerala. Then she moved to Delhi for his higher education. She completed his bachelor degree from Lady Shri Ram College for Women, University of Delhi (1992). She moved to USA and completed MA from the University of Washington (1996). She completed her Phd from Princeton University in 2001. Her husband ,Iqbal Singh Dhaliwal is also belong from economic field and he served as Executive Director at Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab at Department of Economics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology . Currently she is a US citizen.
Our beloved upcoming Chief Economist of IMF is currently serving Harvard University as the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics. Before joining Harvard she joined as a assistant professor in University of Chicago in 2001. She moved to Harvard in 2005 and became the tenured Professor in 2010.
She become the fellow of American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2018. In 2017, University of Washington awarded her with Distinguished Alumnus Award.
In 2014, IMF mentioned her name in top 25 Economic Leaders under the age of 45. She was Selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2011.

According to IMF, she is co-editor of the American Economic Review and International Finance and Macroeconomics Program at National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER).
She is also co-editor of the Handbook of International Economics with former Chief Economist of IMF Kenneth Rogoff.
She will be appointed as the Chief Economist of IMF after the retirement of present Chief Economist of IMF Maury Obstfeld in December. As soon as IMF announced her name as the Chief Economist of IMF, IMF managing director Christine Lagarde congratulated her and and said , “Gita Gopinath is an outstanding economist, with impeccable academic credentials, a proven track record of intellectual leadership, and extensive international experience. I am delighted to name such a talented figure as the Chief Economist of IMF”.
Note : Ex-RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan was also the Chief Economist of IMF in September 2003 – January 2007 Period .

The present Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan , appointed her has the economic advisor of Kerala (in 2016)where she help the state to reform the economic structure to bring back the state in the competition with world economy. Her appointment created a huge controversy. Some communist leaders questioned the CPM-led state government for appointing a person who was more into market economy and liberal policies.
Prime Minister of India , Narendra Modi gave a speech at the World Economic Forum meet in January. After addressing in the forum , IMF managing director Christine Lagarde told Modi that he should mention the women of the country more in his speech to give the proper credit or to encourage them. In a interview in April, Gita commented that Modi should give more attention to women of the country. As she represented Kerala (Left Dominated State) as Economic Advisor of Chief Minister, her comment made some controversy.
